Census Records for John Paul and
Margaretha Schlumberger Lenhart

John Paul Lenhart immigrated from Baden, Germany in 1836 at the age of 3. Four years later the 1840 census index shows that there were 73 Lenhart families in the US - mostly in either Ohio and Pennsylvania. There are no young men who fit John's profile in either the 1850 or 1860 census.

Margaretha Schlumberger, who was of German heritage, was born in Brazil and immigrated to Columbus, Ohio with her mother Margaretha, sister Adeline, and step-brother John Zimmer sometime after the death of her father circa 1829. Margaretha usually gave her birth year as 1836, but based on her brother's obituary, she may have been born sometime in the '20s.

John and Margaretha's children were all said to have been born in Columbus, Ohio between 1863 and 1876, but the family does not appear in the census index for any state in 1870. A page-by-page review of the census for Franklin and Madison Counties (where they lived in 1880) also revealed nothing.

Pike, Madison County, Ohio

Madison borders Franklin County which is where the children were said to have been born. The only family member missing from this census is son Frank, age 16, who is listed as a 'servant' and 'farm laborer' in the household of neighbor William Patrick. All of the children but Frank and Josie were listed as having attended school during the year.

June 1, 1900
Union, Pottawatomie County, Kansas

Sometime between 1880 and about 1890 the family moved to a farm in Kansas. Margaretha had died in Westmoreland, Pottawatomie County on 1896 at the age of 60. Still living with John were his sons John and William as well as William's wife Laura [Kate] and their children Joseph and Laura [Mabel]. John gives his date of immigration as 1860 which is in conflict with the next two census where he gives the year as 1836.

Wamego, Pottawatomie County, Kansas

The family has moved from Union to Wamego. Will has apparently given up farming and is running his own business driving a delivery truck. John is once again listed by his middle name 'Paul.' He again gives his immigration date as 1836 and his 'mother tongue' as German.

John lived another 6 years to the age of 92. Will died in 1929 at the age of 56.
